An abusive relationship isn't abusive at all times. It follows a three phase cycle known as the cycle of violence. The three stages of the Cycle of Violence are:

STAGE 1- The Tension Building Stage: Where the batterer gets frustrated and angry.

STAGE 2 - The Abusive Stage: Where the abuse is released through some act of violence.

STAGE 3 - The Honeymoon Stage: Where the batterer tries to make up with the victim with apologies, gifts, and promises.

Batterers may keep their partners away from their family and friends because they are jealous and possessive. It is important not to mistake this behavior for “love.”
